The name. The bank is known as Kaupthing Bank outside of Iceland. In Iceland, its official name was Kaupþing Banki hf. Formerly, its official name was Kaupþing Búnaðarbanki hf., but the name was changed as the former name was considered too unwieldy for most people.

Kaupthing hf. was established by eight Icelanders in 1982, at the same time as the free capital market was launched in Iceland. Kaupthing hf. later became an investment bank and changed its name to Kaupthing Bank hf. in 2002.
